A personal approach to Guardiola
Ferguson personally reached out to Guardiola, who was nearing the end of his sabbatical after leaving FC Barcelona in 2012. The legendary Scotsman hoped Guardiola would take the reins at Old Trafford. However, despite their conversation, Ferguson waited in vain for Guardiola’s follow-up call.
– I had dinner with Pep Guardiola in New York in 2012, but I couldn’t make any direct approach as retirement wasn’t on my agenda at the time, Ferguson reveals in his autobiography Leading, according to Manchester Evening News.

The call that never came
Ferguson admits he admired Guardiola, who had already claimed numerous trophies with Barcelona.
– I asked Pep to call me before he accepted another job, but the call never came. Instead, he joined Bayern Munich in July 2013, Ferguson concludes.
